Santa Barbara City College horticulture students under the direction of the SBCC instructors and Growing Solutions staff; Don Hartley and Karen Flagg grew plants for, designed and installed the grounds around the campus Life Fitness center. Working on the project in three phases over the course of as many semesters the students have grown appropriate coastal natives using seed from the closest watershed. The students are gaining experience in planning for the parameters of a site. In this case using site specific native plants, low water use plants, and minimal maintenance in a public place while retaining the beautiful ocean views from the campus - a challenge even for experienced landscapers! They have succeeded and phases 1 and 2 are performing as desired. Phase 3 was planted in spring of 2010 and is growing well.
